Alstom has been a key player in Kazakhstan's rail industry since 2010, employing over 1,200 people and contributing significantly to transportation and infrastructure. As the sole manufacturer of electric locomotives in Central Asia and the Caucasus, Alstom operates 10 sites across six cities, including an Electric Locomotive Manufacturing Plant in Astana and multiple service depots. The company is to deliver about 400 locomotives sections to Kazakhstan Temir Zholy JSC (KTZ), providing comprehensive maintenance services, including repairs and overhauls.

Alstom’s sites in Kazakhstan

Electric locomotives manufacturing plant (EKZ)

Located in Astana, the Alstom’s plant is the only producer of electric locomotives in the Central Asian region. It manufactures Prima electric locomotives, including the freight KZ8A and passenger KZ4AT for Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ), and has exported 40 units of the freight AZ8A locomotives to Azerbaijan Railways (ADY). The plant has the capacity to manufacture 100 locomotive sections per year and produces on-board transformers and traction system converters.

EKZ in Nur-Sultan

Repair centre

Repair centre is dedicated to performing corrective and preventive overhaul works for a wide range of railway equipment, maintenance and servicing of the KZ8A and KZ4AT locomotives over a period of 25 years. In addition to these locomotives, the centre is equipped to handle the repair of various components, including pantographs, transformers, and braking systems produced by both Alstom and other manufacturers.

Services Depot 

Services depot is designed to provide full maintenance services for electric locomotives such as the KZ8A and KZ4AT, ensuring operational reliability and lifecycle support over 25 years. The first Alstom services depot runs in Shu (southern part of the country). 3 more to complete in the coming 2-3 years.
